Unique Japanese Souvenirs – The Masu

Hello!

In this post we introduce one of our best-selling items among our overseas customers.

If you have ever been to Japan or an izakaya (Japanese drinking place), you may have seen this square, wooden cup used for drinking nihonshu or sake (Japanese rice wine).

Known as Masu, they are wooden cups often crafted from hinoki (Japanese cypress), which allows you to enjoy the hinoki fragrance while enjoying your glass of sake.

A glass is placed in the middle of the masu, and the sake or nihonshu is poured till it overflows from the glass into the masu cup. It is a unique experience recommended for anyone who has the chance to visit Japan or an izakaya.

Individual iron casts are made to brand your masu should you want an original design or message on it.

Masu come in various sizes used for measuring weight. The most common is the ichi-go masu, which is one-go.

Go is a traditional unit of measurement for the Japanese – while not used officially any longer, it still exists in most rice cookers and rice cups, as a measurement unit for rice.

The masu is also reusable, meaning you get to bring it home as a souvenir after your drinking. Many choose to gift their friends with this unique souvenir, or simply bring it back home as a piece of decor.

Customise your masu with unique messages, fonts, or even illustrations.

For more details about the masu’s history and crafting process, visit this page. Pricelists and the various masu varieties are also listed here.
