Experience Japanese Summer Culture with Nagashi-Soumen!

Hello!

Ever wondered what some of the Japanese practices are during Summer?

Two of the three biggest Japanese festivals in Japan are held during this season – the Gion Festival in Kyoto (July), and the Tenjin Festival in Osaka (also in July).

For those that do not know, the last of the three is the Kanda Festival held in Tokyo (May).

Besides that, the Japanese also practice something called nagashi-soumen.

It is a practice as well as the name of a dish.

Nagashi, which means to flow, and soumen – white, thin Japanese noodles eaten in various styles.

Nagashi-soumen is done by running cold water down the bamboo poles as seen above. Soumen is then placed at the top, and left to flow to the lower parts – people line at the sides of the bamboo poles to stop the soumen with their chopsticks, before dipping them into sauce bowls to eat.

This entire process chills the noodles, and also provides for fun for everyone!

While there are also machines nagashi-soumen machines and electronics sold commercially nowadays, many still choose to do this traditionally outdoors or in their backyards.

If you have a chance, why not try your hand at this customary Japanese practice?
