Hello!
As we draw closer to autumn this year, ever wondered what some of the things associated with the season are in Japan?
Besides the autumn foliage (momiji) that draw crowds of tourists to Japan every year, sports festivals in schools usually take place during this season!
Other than the commonly known tug-of-war and three-legged race that are found in sports festivals worldwide, there are some competitions/sports unique to Japan!
One that is less found elsewhere worldwide is the beanbag toss – where beanbags are thrown into baskets like the ones shown below –
The beanbag toss game is also known as tama-ire. Tama, for ball (or beanbag, in this case), and ire, which means to place into.
The baskets come in various heights and sizes, but most are of a certain height taller than elementary school children – this competition is perhaps most commonly found in elementary schools.
Compared to balls in other sports, these beanbags are of a smaller size and much lighter, making the sport easily accessible to anyone.
Besides sports festivals, some households also have these sets in their home or yards – they make for a great family activity or for an afternoon of fun.
Not much space is required to play the sport; these baskets are also relatively compact in size, allowing even households living in apartments to own a set or two.
If you are looking for a fun family activity this summer for your kids, why not consider renting one of these sets?
